The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed a viral wanted poster bearing the image of popular Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, describing it as fake and misleading.
The EFCC made this known on Thursday in a post on its official social media page, where it stamped the circulating poster “FAKE NEWS” and cautioned those behind it to desist from spreading false information.
“Clout chaser, stop this now!” the EFCC wrote in the caption accompanying the post.
The doctored billboard, which gained circulation across several social media platforms, featured the EFCC emblem and said Sabinus, 43, was wanted for collecting money under false pretense.
It also included a reported last known address of 13/14 Ligali Ayomide Street, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
The findings revealed that the poster resembled the appearance and format commonly employed by the anti-graft agency in declaring people wanted.
The commission did not say if it had identified or was tracking the person or group responsible for the doctored material.
Sabinus, recognized for his skits and online comedic videos, has a big fan base both in and outside of Nigeria.
As of the date of this article, he has not publicly responded to the development.
The EFCC has consistently warned against the dissemination of fake content, advising the public to check information from official sources before sharing.
