Real Madrid defeated Osasuna 2-1 on Saturday to win their 20th Copa del Rey trophy and first since 2014. Rodrygo scored twice while Vinicius Jr sparkled.
Brazilian Rodrygo scored after two minutes, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side were pegged back 13 minutes later when Lucas Torro levelled.
Rodrygo, on the other hand, tapped in a loose ball in the 70th minute to give Real a much-needed victory and a confidence boost as they prepare to meet Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.
Real have lost two of their past three games and are 14 points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona.
However, they were dominating against Osasuna courtesy to a great performance by Vinicius, who was nearly unstoppable down the left channel and was involved in the build-up to both Rodrygo goals with excellent individual runs.
Rodrygo scored the first goal after Vinicius dribbled past several players on the left flank and produced a superb cross with the outside of his foot.
Real had about 65 percent possession, and Vinicius produced multiple chances that his teammates failed to capitalise on.
Rodrygo missed a chance following another Vinicius run, and Osasuna nearly scored on the counter via Abde, but a frantic Dani Carvajal cleared the ball off the goalline.
Later, David Alaba’s free kick struck the crossbar, and Vinicius nearly scored himself with a curling drive from the outside of the box that went just wide.
Real, on the other hand, slowed down in the second half, allowing Osasuna to equalize, with Torro scoring with a low effort from the edge of the penalty area.
Rodrygo, on the other hand, scored the game-winning goal from close range after Vinicius’ run and cross found Toni Kroos, whose effort was deflected off a defender and ended up at the feet of Rodrygo at the far post.
“I’m overjoyed because I’ve just won the only title I didn’t have with Real Madrid at the age of 22.” “It’s an incredible sensation,” Rodrygo told journalists.
“We were talking this week about how long it had been since Real Madrid had won this competition, and I was missing it as well.” “I scored two goals… it was a memorable night for me.”
