Rockets targeted the complex of Baghdad International Airport on Friday evening, an area that hosts a military base and a United States diplomatic facility, Iraqi authorities have confirmed.
According to Iraq’s security media cell, several rockets were fired at about 8:20 pm local time from the Abu Ghraib district, west of the capital.
The statement said a number of rockets were launched towards the airport area but added that several of them landed in empty locations away from the main airport complex.
Security sources earlier told AFP that drones may have carried out the attack. However, a security official later clarified that two rockets not drones fell inside the base.
The facility within the airport compound hosts United States forces and a diplomatic installation, making it a frequent target for armed groups opposed to the US presence in Iraq.
Soon after the attack, a shadowy armed group known as Saraya Awliyaa al-Dam, which claims to be part of the Tehran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq, said it was responsible.
Officials said the attack did not cause casualties or significant damage.
Since the outbreak of the wider conflict in the Middle East, several drones have also been intercepted near Baghdad airport, highlighting ongoing security concerns around strategic sites in Iraq.
