Security personnel on Monday shot tear gas at women protesting against Rivers State’s emergency rule and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Around 200 demonstrators from Elleye and Engine in the Ahead East Local Government Area opposed the nomination of the state’s sole administrator.

The women marched and sung solidarity songs in support of Fubara, holding banners with varied inscriptions as security personnel, including police, attempted to stop them from moving forward.

Some of the placards’ slogans include ‘Ibas leave us alone’ and ‘Our democracy is imperilled’, among others.

Following the women’s refusal to back down from the protest, operatives, including police, launched tear gas to disperse the women who fled haphazardly.

A viral video that later appeared showed several of the women crying after breathing the material from the teargas canister, insisting on Governor Fubara’s return to office.

Some of the women sat on the ground and showered curses on the policeman, chanting, “No Sim, no Rivers State!”

    Details later…
