The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to ensure adequate protection for all children against sexual exploitation and abuse.
She made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja to commemorate World Day for the Prevention and Healing of Child Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse 2025.
According to the Nigerian News Agency, this year’s commemoration will focus on “Strengthening the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse Through Evidence-Based Policy Making.”
Tinubu urged parents and society as a whole to prioritize children’s protection and make it a shared obligation to safeguard them from sexual abuse.
According to Tinubu, as a nation, “we must ensure that every child grows up free from fear and harm.
“I call on government agencies, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, parents, and young people to work together to create a protective environment where children can feel safe to thrive.
“We are reminded that protecting children must go beyond words and good intentions.
“It demands informed action, guided by accurate data, research, and sound policies. May God protect all our children,” she said.
Every year on November 18, the World Day for the Prevention and Healing of Child Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse is observed.
It was founded by the Council of Europe in 2015 as a global call to action for governments, civil society, and individuals to prevent crimes, prosecute criminals, and assist victims and survivors in their healing journey.
The United Nations designated the day in 2022 to increase awareness, foster understanding, and lessen the stigma associated with child sexual abuse.
