The Premier League is expected to host just one fixture on Boxing Day this year, in a major break from long-standing tradition.
The shift in traditional Boxing Day matchups is due to fixture congestion created by more matches in UEFA tournaments and the FA Cup’s move to weekend slots, which have compressed the domestic calendar.
Despite the fact that the festive season normally includes a complete round of matches on December 26, the Premier League is required to supply 33 weekends of fixtures to its television partners, necessitating a reworking of the schedule.
According to Daily Mail Sports, only one televised game will take place on Boxing Day; however, choices have yet to be verified.
To meet broadcasting regulations, the remaining matchups are scheduled for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of the same week.
The move is an unusual departure from one of English football’s most beloved traditions, as supporters have traditionally linked Boxing Day with a jam-packed day of Premier League activity.
