The death toll in the shooting at Charles University in Prague rose to over 15, the Czech Republic’s police chief said Thursday.
“More than 15 people have lost their lives, and at least 24 have been wounded,” police chief Martin Vondrasek told newsmen following the shooting, which happened in the city’s historic center.
On Thursday, a gunman killed 15 people and injured scores more at a Prague university, in the Czech Republic’s bloodiest shooting in decades, before authorities declared the perpetrator “eliminated.”
The violence in the city’s historic center prompted hurried evacuations, a large police response, and cautions to stay indoors.
The shooting occurred at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts, which is located near popular tourist attractions like the 14th-century Charles Bridge.
The shooting on Thursday was the bloodiest since the Czech Republic gained independence in 1993.
