    Pope Francis set to appoint new cardinals in September

    Pope Francis announced on Sunday that he will name 21 new cardinals from throughout the world by the end of September.

    Following his weekly Sunday Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace on Saint Peter’s Square, the Pope said the Cardinal’s “provenance expresses the universality of the Church that continues to proclaim God’s merciful love to all people on earth”.

    The solemn council will be the ninth for the election of cardinals under Pope Francis, who is in his tenth year as Pope.

    Cardinals under the age of 80 will vote to pick Pope Francis’ successor, and his choices of Cardinals, will be scrutinized.

    Among the names the Pope announced on Sunday include clergy in regions where Christianity is growing, such as Latin America, Africa and Asia.

    Among the archbishops to become cardinals are those of Juba, South Sudan, Bogota, and Colombia, as well as bishops from Penang, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

    The names also includes Italian Claudio Gugerotti, currently prefect for the Dicastery of the Eastern Churches.
