The Nigeria Police Force has declared that it will resume statewide enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy on January 2, 2026, citing mounting security concerns about the abuse of unauthorized tinted car glass.
The news was made in a statement released on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin.
According to the police, the decision was made after a study of evolving security risks and the need to improve public safety and is pending the ultimate determination of a connected matter currently before the court.
The Force stressed that no court ruling prevented it from executing the rules governing the use of tinted glass on cars.
The statement explains that enforcement was temporarily suspended for transparency and public convenience, allowing motorists to complete the permit application process without pressure.
However, recent security trends have shown an increase in criminal activity involving vehicles with illegal tinted glass.
According to the authorities, such vehicles have been used by criminals to mask their identities while committing armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
In light of these developments, the police said resuming enforcement was required and urgent as a proactive measure to protect lives and property across the country.
“Recent trends, however, reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorized tinted glass.
“Some individuals and organized criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes.
“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities. Consequently, enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit will resume on 2nd January, 2026,” the statement read.
