Alonyenu Francis Idu, Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, has stated that the circumstances surrounding the death of the manager of Plateau Rider, a Jos-based vehicle transport firm, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, are under investigation.

The manager, Auwalu Aliyu, was shot and killed by suspected assassins at 8 p.m. on Tuesday outside the House of Assembly Complex in Amarata, Yenagoa.

The assailants allegedly stole the money he earned that day.

The assassination sparked alarm in the state capital as locals sought answers to what they perceived as the state’s deteriorating security situation.

The deceased was said to be returning home at the close of the day’s work when he met his untimely demise.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday in his office in Yenagoa, Idu said an investigation was going on to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death.

The police boss assured the residents that the deceased family would soon receive justice because police were undertaking investigations in both Bayelsa and Plateau states, claiming that there was evidence that the criminals could be from outside Bayelsa.

He said, “The manner in which the rider was killed is alien to Bayelsa State. We have the suspicion that the deceased was stalked from Plateau to Bayelsa and killed, or that his death is related to a group of criminal elements currently assembled in the Ogbia Local Government Area.

“So, the circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased are two-dimensional. Our drone was able to capture the signatures of the vehicle that was used to carry out the operation. The last time the vehicle was sighted was when it was heading towards Ogbia.

“As I am speaking to you, the location of the vehicle has yet to be known, but we are sure we will get it soon because we have every detail of the car. So, we sympathise with the family of the deceased, but we are sure they will get justice, and that will happen very soon.”

Idu also took the opportunity to announce that the police are now using drone technology to combat crime in the state.
