A police officer serving with the Borno State Police Command, Mohammad Muhammad, has earned public praise after returning ₦2.6 million that was mistakenly transferred into his bank account.
The incident, which occurred around 6pm on Thursday, involved an accidental bank transfer that surprised the officer, according to the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso.
Sharing a Facebook post by Bello Jafar, Daso commended the officer’s conduct, describing it as a rare display of integrity within and outside the force.
“I would like to formally express my appreciation for Mohammad Alhaji Muhammad, a loyal customer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and a police officer of exceptional integrity,” Daso wrote.
Jafar also praised the officer, noting that his action demonstrated honesty, responsibility and strong moral discipline.
“His conduct reflects the true values expected of a police officer and serves as an example worthy of recognition and commendation,” Jafar said. “Acts like this strengthen public trust and highlight the importance of integrity in both professional and personal life.”
Speaking to reporters, Daso explained that Muhammad immediately took steps to return the money after noticing the unexpected credit alert.
“The officer was surprised because he was not expecting the money. He contacted his account manager, who advised him to visit the bank,” Daso said.
“At the bank, he filled a reversal form to return the funds. The bank officials were surprised because, in many similar cases, recipients often keep or spend the money.”
According to Daso, the officer’s decision to return the funds reflects the values of honesty and accountability expected of law enforcement officers and helps to reinforce public confidence in the police.
