The Ebonyi Police Command have foiled a kidnap attempt in Abakaliki, the state capital, rescuing the victim in the process.
Police spokesperson, Loveth Odah, said one of the kidnappers believed to be the leader of the group was killed by police officers.
She noted that the person abducted by the gang was also rescued unhurt.
The police moved in after receiving a report on December 14 that one Nkechi Felicia Chukwu, an Abakaliki resident, was abducted from her car, Odah said.
“On the strength of the report, police operatives attached to the anti-kidnapping squad trailed the kidnappers to their hideout at New Layout Nkaliki in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the State,” she said, adding that on sighting the police team, the hoodlums opened fire.
“During the encounter one of the hoodlums who was later identified by the victim as the gang leader, sustained bullet wounds, while his gang members escaped to the nearby bush, abandoning the victim and her vehicle,” she said.
The suspect later died in hospital, Odah said, adding that one Berretta pistol, with 9mm live ammunition and Chukwu’s car were recovered from the scene.
