The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest of 38 individuals in connection with the assassination of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya, a Catholic priest from Nsukka Diocese.

The arrests came after a manhunt for the armed individuals who murdered Fr. Eya on September 19, 2025, along the Eha-Ndiagu-Eha-Etiti Road in Eha-Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area.

Eya, a parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church in Eha-Ndiagu, was shot dead while returning from Enugu on Friday evening by suspected Fulani herders who had been terrorizing the area.

However, in a statement published on Sunday by the State Commissioner of Police, Bitrus Giwa, through the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, stated that the police will stop at nothing to apprehend the offenders and bring them to justice.

“We suspect that the assailants are still in the area, and we are determined to fish them out,” Giwa said, commiserating with the immediate family of the deceased and the Catholic Church.”

However, in a statement published on Sunday by the State Commissioner of Police, Bitrus Giwa, through the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, stated that the police will stop at nothing to apprehend the offenders and bring them to justice.

“We have arrested 38 suspects, and they are currently undergoing screening.

“We will ensure that justice is served, and the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to book,” Ndukwe said.

The command emphasized that the suspects are thought to be linked to the murder, and police are attempting to identify the true murderers.
