Bayero University Kano, BUK, has launched a manhunt for the suspected phone thieves who stabbed and killed a 300-level student of the institution, identified as Umar Abdullahi Hafiz.
Lamara Garba, the university’s Director of Public Affairs, confirmed this in a statement released Thursday.
He stated that the event took place at the student’s apartment in Kano’s Dorayi neighbourhood.
According to Lamara, the institution has already made arrangements to take the deceased’s body to his hometown of Zaria in Kaduna State for burial.
The institution also stated that its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, has promised to work closely with security agencies to investigate the crime and bring the thieves to justice.
Abbas also urged calm in the university community, confirming the institution’s commitment to the safety and security of all students and faculty.
Phone snatching in the ancient city has reportedly become a daily phenomenon, resulting in the killing of innocent citizens.
