A fire outbreak has been reported at Terminal One of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, prompting an emergency response and evacuation of passengers.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the MMIA Lagos fire outbreak in a statement on Monday, assuring the public that no casualties have been recorded.
According to FAAN, its firefighting team responded immediately and is working to fully contain the blaze.
“Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to contain the situation. No loss of life has been recorded,” the authority said.
Passengers Evacuated as Emergency Response Intensifies
FAAN said passengers and airport personnel are being evacuated in an orderly manner as emergency operations continue at Terminal One.
To strengthen containment efforts, the agency activated mutual aid arrangements and requested reinforcements from the Lagos State Government, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other relevant emergency agencies.
“Emergency response operations are ongoing as our firefighting teams continue efforts to fully contain and curtail the fire, while the orderly evacuation of passengers and airport personnel is in progress,” FAAN stated.
The agency reassured travellers that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard lives and property.
Details surrounding the cause of the MMIA Lagos fire outbreak and the extent of the damage have not been disclosed.
FAAN said further updates would be provided as the situation develops.
This is not the first fire-related incident at the airport. On April 25, 2024, flight operations at Terminal One were diverted to the D Wing following another fire outbreak. In March 2024, FAAN also reported a minor wire spark that caused thick smoke, leading to temporary evacuations of travellers and workers.
