Nigerian former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has been appointed co-chair of the newly launched Future of Development Cooperation Coalition, a global initiative seeking to rethink how countries work together to finance and deliver sustainable development.

The announcement was made on Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where former Spanish foreign minister Arancha González Laya was unveiled as Osinbajo’s co-chair. González Laya is a seasoned multilateral expert, having previously served as Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations (UN).

The coalition is being launched at a critical moment for global development. Traditional aid models are under strain, foreign assistance budgets are shrinking, and geopolitical tensions are deepening fractures within the multilateral system.

Backed by commissioners drawn from government, business and civil society, the independent and time-bound coalition will work over the next 12 months to craft a bold, shared vision for development cooperation.

Its ambition is to move beyond piecemeal reforms and propose approaches that can deliver impact at scale.

According to its mandate, the coalition will reassess what development cooperation should achieve in today’s global economy, how it can be financed responsibly, and how partnerships can be redesigned to better support sustainable development outcomes worldwide.
