The Amakpu Okuku community in Imo State’s Owerri West Local Government Area was thrown into mourning on Friday when a man in his fifties, simply identified as Odomma, was discovered dead after apparently committing suicide.

Residents reported the father of four, who sold water in jerrycans and buckets, had long struggled financially, leaving him unable to support himself and his family.

His body was discovered hanging in an unfinished building near his home as people went about their everyday routines.

According to residents, Odomma threatened suicide approximately three months ago, claiming that his wife and children had stopped feeding him because he could no longer support the family.

A community member, simply known as Ikenna, told our correspondent that the deceased had expressed his frustrations to a few friends.

“He said if the situation continued, he would take his life to end the misery.

“We advised him to report the matter to the village head for settlement. Sadly, he chose this path. Just see how this man ended his life because of money. He could have sold his GP tank or generator to get food, but he decided to take his life. Now others will gather to eat, and he won’t be part of it,” Ikenna said.

According to eyewitnesses, tens of residents hurried to the area after hearing the news, surrounding the unfinished structure to see the motionless body and video with their phones.

Odomma, a popular water seller in the village with prices starting at ₦100, has been described as hard-working yet sad in recent months.

When reached, Imo State Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye stated that he would verify the event with the Divisional Police Officer of Owerri West.

“Please give me some minutes to call and confirm with the DPO of Owerri West Local Government Area. I will get back to you shortly,” he said.
