The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, entertained the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, Speakers, Deputy Speakers and Majority Leaders from other State Houses of Assembly throughout the country to Iftar on Thursday, where he affirmed his commitment to legislative independence in the country.

The delegation, led by Mr Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and current Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, met at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex to promote legislative unity, discuss governance, and strengthen the campaign for State Legislature autonomy.

The Iftar gathering gave an opportunity for politicians to improve inter-state legislative contacts, share legislative ideas, and address crucial issues impacting their respective assemblies.

Obasa underlined his support for legislative independence and cooperation among state legislators in his welcome address.

He emphasised the need for Houses of Assembly to function properly to provide good governance and long-term development throughout the federation.

“I sincerely appreciate this visit and your constant support. Our collective responsibility is to uphold the integrity of our respective Houses of Assembly and continue to work for the progress of our States and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin praised Obasa’s persistent commitment to the expansion and autonomy of state legislatures.

“Obasa has remained a pillar in championing the cause of the Houses of Assembly in Nigeria. His dedication to legislative independence and effective governance is commendable, and we appreciate his unwavering commitment,” Ogundoyin noted.

The occasion included in-depth discussions on legislative best practices and problems, followed by a symbolic Iftar that strengthened the lawmakers‘ sense of solidarity and fraternity.

The meeting also reiterated state legislatures’ commitment to democratic values, legislative excellence, and better governance at all levels.
