The Mining Team of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intercepted a trailer transporting stolen railway slippers in Bauchi State. The operation took place on June 20 along the Missu axis.
According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the slippers were concealed beneath sacks of sawdust — a method interpreted as an intentional effort to disguise the theft and vandalism of public infrastructure.
The Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the development in a statement released on Tuesday by the Deputy Director of Public Relations at the Corporation, Mr. Yakub Mahmood.
“This is the biggest heist in recent times. The NRC Police Command confronted economic saboteurs targeting railway assets nationwide,” Opeifa said.
He revealed that three suspects were arrested during the operation and that both the vehicle and the stolen items are now in NSCDC custody for further investigation.
Opeifa also disclosed that the Railway Police and NSCDC have been actively cracking down on such crimes, with multiple arrests and recoveries made in Bauchi, Kano, Kwara, and Gombe states.
Reiterating the corporation’s resolve to protect the nation’s rail infrastructure, he added, “This arrest reflects our zero tolerance for railway vandalism. We will pursue every culprit threatening the future of rail transport in Nigeria.”
