Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has officially stepped down from his position.

Soneye announced his resignation via a Facebook post on Saturday, citing personal commitments as the reason for his departure.

“I wish to inform you that I have stepped aside from my role as Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.

“This decision will allow me to devote more time to my family and attend to personal responsibilities that now require my closer presence,” he write.

The post attracted commendations from colleagues and followers, many of whom praised his professionalism and dedication to public service.

Reflecting on his time at NNPCL, Soneye described it as “an honour,” noting his pride in having contributed to the ongoing reforms in the national oil company.

“It has been a profound honour to serve both the Company and our country, and to contribute in my own way to the ongoing transformation of NNPC Ltd. I am deeply grateful for the trust reposed in me, the opportunities granted, and the incredible professionals both within and outside the organisation with whom I have worked,” he stated.

He also reaffirmed his continued support for the company, calling on media professionals to uphold constructive journalism in support of NNPCL’s goals.

“I remain a steadfast supporter and ambassador of NNPC Ltd wherever I go. I enjoin you, dear colleagues, to continue your robust, balanced, and constructive reportage to support the Company’s noble mission and strategic role in Nigeria’s energy future. With sincere appreciation,” his statement concluded.

Soneye was appointed to the role on October 18, 2023, replacing Garba Muhammad, who held the position from August 2021.

Before joining NNPCL, Soneye had an extensive journalism career across Nigeria, Australia, and the United States. He previously served as Editor of the US Air Force One Magazine in Washington, D.C., and was President of the Nigerian Media Practitioners in the U.S. capital.

A highly regarded media professional, he is a member of several notable associations, including the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Society of Professional Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, and the Guild of Corporate Online Media Publishers.

In recognition of his communication expertise, Soneye was awarded “Spokesperson of the Year” by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in both 2024 and 2025.
