Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) Labour arrived at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for a closed-door meeting with government representatives, a highly placed source informed our correspondent on Monday.

“We are also meeting with the government representative in the SGF office today. I am already seated, awaiting the government representative,” the source said.

The source, however, did not mention the names of the government representatives who were to attend the meeting with the labour leaders at the time of filing this report.

Chronicle NG reports that some unions have shut down their workplaces to comply with the directive of the two labour unions to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.

On Friday, organised labour stated that they would go on a statewide indefinite strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to raise the recommended minimum wage from N60,000.

According to Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the strike would start at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

In a joint statement, Ajaero and his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Festus Osifo, voiced their deep concern and displeasure with the Federal Government’s refusal to finalise and pass a new National Minimum Wage Act.

Remember that both unions had set a deadline of May 31, 2024, for discussions on the new minimum wage.

However, negotiations between the NLC, TUC and the federal government broke down on Tuesday after both groups presented their proposals.

The government boosted its initial offer of N57,000 by N3,000, making it N60,000.

The NLC and TUC rejected this suggestion during the meeting. During negotiations at this meeting, labour also dropped its demand from last week’s proposal of N497,000 to N494,000 by eliminating N3,000.00, bringing their new request down to N494,000.
