Nigerians react as man threatens suicide

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to decriminalising attempted suicide in Nigeria, with the legislation slated to take effect in December 2025.

A Nigerian man, Amos James Gbaja, has threatened to commit suicide by drinking a poisonous insecticide.

In a statement on his X page on Tuesday, Gbaja announced being suicidal over the deaths of all his loved ones.

Gbaja lamented that the “loneliness” as a result of losing his parents and siblings is “suffocating.”  He noted his desire to commit suicide in a bid to be with his dead loved ones.

“Dear God, I can’t bear the weight of losing my loved ones. The loneliness is suffocating. I feel like I have no choice but to be with them. Please forgive me for what I’m about to do,” Gbaja’s statement reads.

The 23-year-old man lamented that he has “no one to call father, mother, sister, or brother.”

The suicidal man added that he lost his dad in 2020, his elder sister in 2022, his mom in 2023, and “now another elder sister in 2024. Dear God, I don’t deserve all this pain,” he said.

Reacting to the Gbaja threat to commit suicide, Ademoye Mercy urged him to jettison the idea. Saying, “There is no reason worth taking your life.

“I don’t know you personally, but please, you are special and important to me alive. Don’t commit suicide. There’s more to life than you think. I might not know or understand what you are going through, but trust me, you’ll be fine.”

Aniyikaye advised the young man, saying, “Taking your own life isn’t the best option. I have no idea what you’re going through, but trust me, you’re stronger than you think.

“Everything does happen for a reason; you don’t have to end it all by yourself, even though the pain and heartbreak might be unbearable. But always remember that tough times never last, but tough people do.”

Akinsola Akin also advised Gbaja not to end it all. He urged him to use the loss of his loved ones as a propeller to make them proud.

“Whatever you are going through, there’s hope for tomorrow.

“Remember, Wigwe‘s children are also going through the same thing, and they are not thinking of snipers.

“Get yourself together and move on. You have God, the spirits of your father, mother, brother, and sister, praying and watching over you to succeed. Get up and make them proud,” Akin noted.

While another X user advised him, saying, “Taking your life won’t solve the problem, bro. God will console you, ok?” Another noted that Gbaja’s suicide threat is a false alarm, saying he “wants attention and engagements. Don’t mind him.”
