The Federal Government of Nigeria has criticised Israel’s recent preemptive military strike on Iran, calling it a dangerous escalation of Middle Eastern conflicts.
According to a press statement signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Saturday, the strike initiated a persistent exchange of missiles and aircraft assaults between the two countries.
The ministry demanded an immediate suspension of hostilities and encouraged both parties to display maximum moderation in the interests of regional and global peace.
The government reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful cohabitation, non-aggression, and multilateral diplomacy, emphasising the need for communication over confrontation for all interested parties.
The statement went on to say that armed action is not a substitute for negotiation and that diplomacy, mutual respect, and commitment to international law are the keys to long-term peacemaking.
Nigeria also expressed its willingness to help any genuine initiatives aimed at promoting peace and de-escalation in the region.
The statement reads, “As a nation deeply committed to the principles of peaceful coexistence, non-aggression, and multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria calls on all involved to prioritise dialogue over confrontation.
“We urge the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to intensify efforts toward immediate de-escalation and to provide a platform for constructive engagement.
“We reiterate that military action is not a substitute for negotiation. The path to lasting peace lies in diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law.
“Nigeria stands ready to support all genuine efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region.”
