Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), claims he is unaware that beleaguered Super Eagles coach Finidi George has resigned.
This comes after the NFF said Thursday that it would appoint an “expatriate technical adviser” for the Eagles, following their terrible performances in the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
The Eagles have only three points out of a potential twelve and are fifth in the six-team Group C, jeopardising their qualification ambitions.
The Eagles’ poor performances enraged the country’s football-crazy population, which is still reeling from the team’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The NFF’s announcement on Thursday elicited mixed reactions, with some team supporters demanding for the federation’s board members and Finidi to go.
According to reports, Finidi is outraged that the NFF leadership met with the sports minister two days ago but failed to mention that players arrived late to camp and that they (the NFF) did nothing to mobilise Nigerians in Ivory Coast to support the Eagles in last Monday’s match against Benin Republic.
According to sources, Finidi, who has overseen only two Eagles games since taking over in April, quit on Tuesday morning.
However, when our correspondent sent a WhatsApp message to Gusau to confirm Finidi’s resignation, he answered, “Not yet aware.”
