The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has justified the arrest and detention of social critic Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.

In a statement shared on its official channels, the EFCC stated that it could not ignore the series of petitions involving “grave allegations of financial crimes” against VeryDarkMan.

The anti-graft agency said, despite multiple invitations sent via his known addresses and communication channels, Otse refused to honour the Commission’s summons, prompting his arrest. The EFCC revealed that the petitions against him detail serious financial misconduct that demands thorough investigation.

While the Commission acknowledged Otse’s verbal attacks on its operations, it clarified that these played no role in his arrest. “The relevant law enforcement agency will deal with such conduct,” the EFCC stated.

Backed by a legally obtained Remand Order, the EFCC affirmed its right to detain VeryDarkMan as part of an ongoing investigation. He has been granted administrative bail and will be released upon meeting all set conditions.

The EFCC expressed appreciation for the public’s strong interest in its activities but urged Nigerians to refrain from questioning its motives. “We welcome the engagement, but the EFCC must be allowed to do its job—without fear or favour,” it concluded.

As investigations near completion, the Commission confirmed that formal charges will follow in accordance with due process.
