Former US President Barack Obama has stated that Donald Trump’s electoral victory in the election was not what he had hoped for, emphasising the need for a peaceful transition of power.
Obama’s statements contrast sharply with Trump’s unusual refusal four years ago to acknowledge defeat to Joe Biden, which culminated in a violent attack by his followers on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
In a statement on Wednesday, Obama said, “This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for. But living in a democracy is about recognising that our point of view won’t always win out and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power.”
The former president also expressed pride in the work of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, who were brutally defeated in the election.
Obama called them “two extraordinary public servants who ran a remarkable campaign.
