President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of free healthcare access for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), a move he described as essential to restoring dignity and providing social protection in old age.

The directive came after a high-level briefing from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, at the State House on Tuesday, Bayo Onanuga, presidential media aide, disclosed this in a statement.

In a firm show of support for retirees, the President also ordered the swift implementation of long-delayed pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee. The new safety net aims to protect the most vulnerable pensioners under the CPS from hardship.

Significantly, Tinubu instructed PenCom to urgently resolve the long-running police pension issue. He emphasised that officers who have dedicated their lives to national security must retire with dignity and peace of mind.

During the briefing, Ms. Oloworaran outlined key pension reforms designed to shield pension fund assets from inflation and macroeconomic volatility. Among the measures is a bold plan to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to the CPS in foreign currencies.

Tinubu expressed full backing for the reforms, reaffirming his administration’s pledge to drive inclusive economic growth and strengthen protections for everyday Nigerians.

These initiatives mark a major push to expand the reach and impact of Nigeria’s pension system, ensuring greater security for the nation’s ageing population.
