A student of the Obada Idi-Emi High School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, simply identified as Ariyo, has reportedly died after a teacher allegedly beat him with 162 strokes of the cane for breaking a dustbin.
Adetoun, an activist, shared the encounter on Instagram on Friday.
According to Adetoun, the instructor reportedly took a dustbin to Ariyo’s class and instructed the pupils not to break it.
She described how Ariyo had playfully told the teacher that the dustbin was purchased with student money, which upset the teacher.
The teacher was believed to have reported to the principal, who ordered that the student be punished.
Acting on the principal’s instructions, the teacher allegedly flogged Ariyo with 162 strokes of the cane, causing the pupil to fall and collapse.
Adetoun went on to say that the instructor and some school staff members who were on the scene delayed transporting Ariyo to the hospital for medical assistance, and when they did, he was already dead.
A senior police official who was aware of the incident but was not permitted to communicate with the media confirmed it to our correspondent.
He stated that the incident caused tension in the vicinity but that the police intervened to calm things down.
“We are on the matter; the incident wanted to create tension, but we were able to douse the tension,” the police source said.
Omolola Odutola, a spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the event on Friday, saying the student was pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, the state capital.
She claimed that, contrary to reports, Ariyo was forced to execute 162 frog jumps and was flogged with a cane 24 times.
She said, “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane.
“He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today (October 25). The deceased body has been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy. An investigation is ongoing.”
