The Taliban Interior Ministry announced on Thursday that a woman who had been imprisoned in a dark room in the Afghan capital for 25 years had been rescued.
According to frightening photographs published by the ministry, the woman was confined in a room filled with garbage.
She was fed through a window.
“She feels unsafe and afraid whenever she sees other people,” ministry spokesman Abdul Matin Qani said as he described her ordeal.
The woman is said to be receiving treatment in a Kabul hospital after being subjected to mental and physical harm.
“Malnourished, she has also become severely anaemic,” a doctor said.
According to doctors, her bones were worn and her joints were injured.
According to the police, she underwent years of hardship following her divorce from her first husband, with other issues including infertility, her brother’s criminal activities, and an inheritance dispute.
Four members of her family, including her brother and nephews, have been arrested.
The case is being fully investigated by the police.
