A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated a device in a marketplace in Kauri, a rural village in the Konduga region of Borno State, North East Nigeria.

The bombing occurred at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, in the market area, which is open every night and is normally crowded, according to the Daily Trust.

Boko Haram has often terrorised the regions, which are mostly roadside communities along the Bama-Maiduguri road.

This is just one of countless attacks on communities in recent months.

According to local sources, there were many casualties, including a policeman and one woman, who were killed in that attack while two patrol vans were set ablaze.

A village government official stated that the bomb went off around 8:05 p.m. inside a local tea shop where the villagers had gathered for a night discussion and that dozens of people were injured.

“Nobody can say exactly how it happened, but we suspected that the bomb was planted, not a suicide attack.

“We saw corpses of 19 people with an unspecified number of civilians injured. The injured were evacuated to an undisclosed hospital in Maiduguri for treatment,” the source told the Daily Trust on condition of anonymity.

The Kawuri settlement is around 50 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital.

The incident occurred 24 hours after Shettima Mustapha, an accountant with the Local Education Authority in Damboa Local Government Area, was killed when his vehicle collided with an IED on the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu route in Borno.

Attempts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Daso, were fruitless because his phone could not be contacted at the time of submitting this report.

The event occurred on the eve of a planned statewide protest, which the administration has repeatedly warned could be hijacked by hoodlums and terrorists.

According to reports, no official statement has been issued regarding the terrible incident as of the time of posting this story. Authorities have yet to ascertain the number of fatalities.
