The FCT police command has claimed that members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) popularly known as the Shiite group have attacked five police officers, killing two and leaving three unconscious in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The FCT police command on Sunday noted that the attack by Shiite Muslims on the police officers occurred at Wuse junction by the traffic light. The police say some arrests have been made but more arrests are expected to be made.

Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, in a statement said that the was under control and that normalcy has been restored.

“The FCT police command wishes to confirm an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shiite’ group, on some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT command at Wuse Junction by traffic light, where two (2) police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three (3) police patrol vehicles set ablaze,” the statement said.

Shi'ite leader Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky has been released following a court order

“The proscribed organisation attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives. While several arrests have been effected, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh condemns the unprovoked attack on police officers.

“He promises to bring those involved to book. The situation is presently under control and normalcy restored. Further development will be communicated in due course,” the statement added.
