Protests erupted at the Rivers State secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Harcourt on Thursday as tensions rose ahead of the local government election scheduled for October 5, 2024.
Protesters gathered at the party’s secretariat, causing traffic congestion and requiring security intervention.
The demonstration comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) delayed releasing the 2023 Voters’ Register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, causing growing concerns.
It was gathered that Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, in a ruling delivered on September 30, 2024, barred INEC from releasing the voters’ register to RSIEC due to legal challenges.
However, Governor Siminalayi Fubara insisted that the election would go as planned.
Fubara expressed confidence that the Supreme Court’s previous decision, which required all states in the federation to have democratically elected local government executives, supports his argument.
