The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has declared that October 5 will be the date of the state’s local government elections.
On Monday, the commission published its recommendations regarding the state’s LGA elections.
This occurred as a result of the state police continuing to occupy the local government area council secretariats in the wake of the LGAs’ unstable leadership.
As the terms of the elected chairman and council members of the 23 LGAs came to an end, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, the Rivers state governor, established caretaker committees until an LG election could be held.
However, the move has prompted protests from the outgoing chairmen, who are devoted to Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
They maintain that the State Assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule, extended their term by six months by repealing the state’s Local Government Administration law.
