New Zealand simplifies work visa requirements for spouses of foreign students

In order to make New Zealand a more appealing destination for international students and their families, the government has proposed updated immigration requirements.

These amendments will allow spouses of international students enrolled in particular higher education programmes to obtain work visas.

The amended standards are aimed at spouses of students engaged in programmes aligned with New Zealand’s Green List vocations, notably those at Levels 7 and 8.

This includes graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, and bachelor’s honours degrees.

The Green List recognises occupations in high demand in New Zealand, providing a streamlined method for talented talent to enter the nation.

Under the new criteria, spouses and partners of students with the mentioned credentials can now speed up their residency applications, perhaps securing immediate residence or earning it after two years of working in their qualifying roles.

This policy amendment underlines New Zealand’s commitment to attracting talented talent and supporting the families of overseas students.

It is intended to relax the job eligibility requirements, making the country more appealing to potential students.

The new guidelines make it easier for students with valid visas to sponsor multiple visa applications for their partners and dependent children.

Partners of students may apply for a “Partner of a Student Work Visa” if their spouse is enrolled in an applicable Level 7 or 8 qualification on the Green List.

This work visa has open conditions, allowing applicants to seek employment without requiring pre-existing job offers in New Zealand.

The new Green List covers a wide range of bachelor’s degrees and bachelor’s honours qualifications that can lead to professional registration, recognising the value of these credentials in particular occupations.

This exemption from overseas tuition costs will allow school-aged children to attend school in New Zealand without incurring the financial burden associated with international education.
