At least two people were reportedly killed while seven others were injured during a renewed clash between the Ndeji and Lema communities in Lafiagi Emirate in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The two communities wedged between Gbugbu and Lafiagi, headquarters of the Edu Local Government Council, are frequently at odds over property disputes.

However, police stated that they are on top of the matter and that two individuals have been apprehended in connection with the event.

According to local sources who talked with the media on Thursday, the situation started with a long-standing land dispute between the two groups.

According to a source, tensions rose when a community leader was believed to be planning to transfer the disputed territory to the Lema community, instilling dread in the Ndeji people and resulting in a violent clash between the two groups.

The situation worsened as both parties attempted to preserve their interests, culminating in increased tensions and conflict.

“The fight started when there was a rumour flying around that the Emir of Lafiagi was plotting to cede the land in dispute to the Lema people.

“And you know our people (the Nupe tribe), they believe in charms, and this is why they started the violence immediately after the rumour spread,” the source said.

He stated that the two deceased victims, Mohammed Alhaji and Aliu Hussain, apparently died while attempting to protect an imam in their town.

According to the source, one of the casualties was a student at Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin.

Victor Olaiya, the Kwara Commissioner of Police, verified the incident to reporters.

Olaiya stated the event had been kept under control and that peace had returned to the region.

Olaiya indicated that several suspects had been arrested and that efforts were underway to arrest more.

The Police Commissioner said, “Yes, it is true there was a communal clash between two communities sandwiched between Gbugbu and Lafiagi in Edu local government. They were fighting over land. Two people were killed and about seven people were injured, and they have been taken to the hospital where they were receiving treatment.

“We want to assure members of the public of the safety of their lives and property. The perpetrators are now in our custody, while an investigation is ongoing,” Olaiya said.
