The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, led a protest against the recent increase in electricity tariffs at the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission headquarters in Abuja on Monday.
Our correspondent at the scene also reports that protesters forced their way into the NERC complex.
Workers under the aegis of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress thronged various offices of electricity distribution companies.
The organised labour movement launched statewide protests against the Federal Government’s increase in electricity tariffs and elimination of subsidies from the power sector.
The strike was also scheduled to shut down the NERC headquarters in Abuja, the Ministry of Power, and state power distribution company offices.
The NERC revealed the increase in electricity pricing for Band A consumers at a press event in Abuja on April 3, stating that individuals impacted will pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from the previous rate of N68/kWh.
