Hunger Protest: Igbos deceived the North into protesting, Nigerians lament

Amid the ongoing hunger protest, Nigerians have accused the Igbos of failing to join the protest in the southeast despite clamouring for the demonstration on social media.

Describing it as deception on the part of the Igbos, Nigerians lamented that while the demonstrations have taken an ugly turn in the north, the south-east remains calm as the demonstrations did not hold in the region.

Nigerians, in several statements on X, mentioned that the North, which has been worst hit by looting and destruction of properties as a result of the demonstrations, was deceived by the Igbos.

Confirming the speculation, Nwachukwu Nwoke, a social media user, argued that despite withdrawing from the protest, the region deceived other regions to demonstrate.

“We did not protest in our region, but we gaslighted them to protest in theirs. Igbo kwenu,” Nwoke said.

Sharing similar sentiments, former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, questioned why the demonstrations did not hold in the southeast.

“It’s all quiet on the eastern front while shops and government buildings are torched and looted in other parts of the country.

“Hoodlums snatching phones, burning offices, damaging traffic lights, and looting shops are not peaceful protesters,” Sani said.

In the same vein, Adex Smith said, “Igbos deceived the north. I hope northerners recover from this. Our prayers and support are with the Governor of Kano, Kaduna, and Adamawa State. The North got played.”

“Deceived the North by asking them to come out in their numbers to protest,” Olayinka stated in his reaction.

In his reaction, another social media user, OG Beeper, said, “Sorry to them for destroying their land after getting played by their Igbo allies. All because they can’t stay calm as they’re not in power. May Allah be with them.”

“How will you follow the words of the people who sit at home on Mondays? All the social media warriors are laughing at the north now. No one can gaslight the Yorubas. We are wise,” Emerald Oluwaferanmi Olanrewaju mentioned.

Ire Wole, in his reaction, mentioned that the Yoruba were not oblivious to the adverse effects of the demonstrations.

He mentioned that Lagos State had yet to recover from the destruction of properties, which characterised the #EndSARS demonstrations.

“We were shouting here because we knew the level of destruction that was done in 2020 in the name of protest. Till today, Lagos has not fully recovered from that. Do not allow your small asset and infrastructure to be destroyed via protest. No protest without agenda,” Wole stated.
