A police station in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State was on Sunday set ablaze by hoodlums.
The miscreants stormed the station located along the Umuchu-Achina road at about 3 am and set the facility on fire.
The Nation gathered that the station, which was destroyed during the #EndSARS protest in 2020, was renovated by members of the Umuchu Improvement Union.
According to a source, no casualty was recorded during the attack as security operatives had vacated the station to another location and were yet to return following its destruction during the #EndSARS protest.
“Community leaders had renovated the station and its adjourning infrastructure and upgraded it to fit the status of a divisional police station before donating it to the Nigeria Force to help in the fight against insecurity in the area.
“The station was vacated after it was attacked in 2020 and there was no officer on duty at the time of the Sunday attack,” the source added.
President-General, of Umuchu Improvement Union, Charles Ezeabasili, described the incident as disheartening and unfortunate.
While the Union has upgraded facilities at the station and awaited the return of police personnel, the hoodlums are busy destroying, demolishing, and burning down the facility meant for our own good. How do we progress?” he decried.
Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga said calm has returned in the area, adding that an investigation had commenced.
He said: “The station is still under renovation before the hoodlums came in the early hours today and set it ablaze.
“The situation is under control and calm has returned in the area.
“We want to use this opportunity to reach out to the people of the community to assist the police with information on the already ongoing investigation.”
