Suspected gunmen laid siege to the Warri-Sapele highway in Delta State on Friday, robbing travellers indiscriminately of money and valuables.
It was gathered that the gunmen operated on the road between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.., during which some travellers were injured and their belongings forcefully collected.
It was reported that an Elume boy, who made spirited efforts to run away from the robbery scene, was shot by the hoodlums.
He was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
Other people who were injured at the robbery scene were sent to Oghara Teaching Hospital for treatment.
It was further reported that robbery incidents have become a regular occurrence on the road, especially at night, as soon as police patrol operatives leave their checkpoints and robbery suspects take over the road.
“It’s almost becoming a daily affair,” the source stated.
Speaking on the incident, the Delta Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.
“We are aware, and the DPO and his men swiftly went there. The armed robbers, however, escaped into the bush. But we are on their trail,” the PPRO stated.
