Baltasar Engonga, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, ANIF, has been remanded in Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.
The embattled former anti-graft chief was detained a few days ago after allegedly capturing over 400 sex tapes involving the wives of significant leaders in the country.
This issue erupted during a fraud probe into the 54-year-old economist, prompting ANIF officers to conduct an unplanned search of his home and workplace, where they allegedly uncovered multiple CDs revealing his sexual escapades with several married women.
Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, sacked Engonga when the footage surfaced online, triggering a media outrage.
According to Decree No. 118/2024, dated 4th November, the dismissal was due to “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public duties.”
On Friday, a viral video emerged on social media, showing Engonga tied on both wrists and legs during a court hearing.
Confirming the scenario, French online site Afrikmatin said that Engonga, who was officially ousted from his position on November 6, 2024, was chained and sent to Malabo Central Prison. He is accused of corruption and embezzlement.
Furthermore, according to online daily UGStandard, the sex films began spreading on social networks when Engonga was already being jailed at Malabo’s notorious Black Beach Prison on charges of embezzling public monies.
In a fact-checking report issued Wednesday, Dubawa confirmed that Engonga was arrested on corruption accusations and is currently being imprisoned at Black Beach Prison.
