On Thursday, a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi ruled that 59-year-old Kelvin Iorfa be held in a detention facility for legal counsel.
Iorfa was accused with assault and attempted culpable murder.
Mrs Roseline Iyorshe, the Magistrate, did not accept Iorfa’s plea for lack of jurisdiction.
Iyorshe directed the police to forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions in Benue for legal advice.
She postponed the matter until June 8 for additional consideration.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Godwin Ato, informed the court that Jenkies Shade of KM 4 Gboko Road, Makurdi reported the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi on April 11.
On April 10, Shade allegedly revealed that Iorfa savagely brutalised his elder sister, Nguwasen of Clerk Quarters, Makurdi.
“He hit her with an object on her head and other sensitive parts of her body until she became unconscious,” according to the prosecution.
Following the petition, the prosecution informed the court that Iorfa was apprehended by police investigators and confessed to the crime.
He said the crime violated Sections 266 and 230 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State 2004.
The prosecutor, who said that the inquiry was still underway, requested an adjournment.
