Waheed Ayilara, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, has died.
The Nation reported that Ayilara died in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.
Sources close to the family informed The Nation that he had prostate cancer surgery on Wednesday before dying hours later.
“We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead,” the family was quoted as saying.
A top police personnel in Akwa Ibom State, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to do so, confirmed the CP’s death.
Ayilara was appointed interim Commissioner of Police in Lagos in November 2023, although still a DCP.
Ayilara, a former Deputy Commissioner of Police in command of the State Criminal Investigations Department, succeeded AIG Idowu Owohunwa.
Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, appointed Ayilara to lead the Akwa Ibom State Command in February 2024.
At the time of filing this report, the command had yet to give a statement on his demise.
