No fewer than 14 worshippers have been killed in Imawa town, within Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, by a moving truck that lost control.
According to reports, the incident occurred on the highway when a truck collided with worshippers returning from Juma’at following the two rakat Friday prayers.
CC Ibrahim Abdullahi, Kano Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident to journalists and stated that several other worshippers were injured.
According to a statement issued by his spokeswoman, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, the Sector Commander, preliminary indications indicate that the truck holding registration number Reg No. MKA 537 XN lost control and collided with worshippers who had just finished their Friday prayers.
According to him, “the tragic road traffic crash was reported at 1350 hrs. According to preliminary reports, a truck bearing registration number Reg No. MKA 537 XN lost control and collided with pedestrians who had just concluded Friday prayers. This unfortunate collision resulted in the tragic loss of fourteen lives and left several others injured.
“Upon receiving the distress call, FRSC Kano State Command promptly dispatched personnel to the scene, alongside other security agencies, to initiate rescue operations and provide immediate medical assistance to the injured victims,” he said.
The Sector Commander stated that attempts were underway to determine the actual circumstances surrounding the disaster.
CC Abdullahi, while expressing his sympathies to the families of the deceased, emphasises the corps’ commitment to road safety and urges all road users to rigorously follow traffic regulations to avoid such preventable tragedies.
In another incident, a structure under construction in Dorayi Babba, Gwale Local Government Area, Kano, killed the owner, his child, and construction workers.
According to reports, the collapsed structure injured eight additional people, including construction workers and bystanders who sought shelter in the building during a morning downpour.
Local sources reveals that casualties are now being treated at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
