The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N100 billion for the rehabilitation of police and other security agencies’ training institutions across Nigeria.

This decision followed recommendations from an ad hoc committee set up to assess the condition of security training facilities nationwide.

At its 154th virtual meeting on Wednesday, NEC also approved N2.6 billion for consultancy services related to the project.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier proposed the overhaul of security agencies’ training institutions during the 152nd NEC meeting in October.

Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu and chairman of the committee, said training facilities in the institutions were in dire state.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chairs the NEC, said the government is committed to addressing the issue and urged state governors to ensure that economic reforms lead to tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.

Shettima noted that governance needs to be measured by real outcomes rather than policy rhetoric.

“Our task is not to admire problems, but to solve them. Not to explain challenges, but to overcome them. And not to hope for progress, but to engineer it,” he said.

“Today’s agenda speaks to our shared responsibility to build a nation where reforms translate into results, and where policies are not mere promises but convincing instruments of change felt in the markets, schools, clinics and farms across our federation.”

The council also received updates from the accountant-general of the federation on key accounts, including the excess crude account, stabilization account, and natural resources development account.

On polio eradication, the NEC ad hoc committee reported a 39 percent reduction in circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) cases in 2025 compared to 2024, with significant progress in Kano and Katsina.

The council endorsed renewed vaccination campaigns targeting northern states and Oyo, emphasizing coordinated efforts to reach vulnerable communities.

Additionally, Ekperikpe Ekpo, the minister of state for petroleum (gas), briefed NEC on the domestic gas supply situation and the government’s plan to settle outstanding debts of N185 billion owed to gas producers, facilitating increased domestic gas production.
