The Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has set up an independent panel of inquiry to investigate the fire outbreak that ravaged AfriLand Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, on September 16, 2025.
The horrific incident took the lives of several people, including Mrs. Ndidi Osaemedike-Okeke, a member of the association.
According to a statement signed by Branch Chairman Mrs. Uchenna Ogunedo-Akingbade, the NBA described the move as part of its responsibility to uphold the rule of law and protect fundamental human rights.
“The panel will probe the circumstances surrounding the fire, assess compliance with safety standards, and make recommendations to prevent future occurrences,” the statement read.
Nonso Azih chairs the panel, with Vivian Okoh-Olutunfese acting as alternate chair and Dan Whisky as secretary.
Other members include Theophilus Alao, Maduka Onwukeme, and Fola Akintunde.
According to Akingbade, the Lagos Branch hopes that the panel’s findings and suggestions will promote accountability and improve public safety.
“We look forward to their findings and recommendations,” she said.
