A man died from gunshot wounds and seven others were wounded overnight in Naples when the southern Italian city erupted in celebration of its football team’s win, a local government official said on Friday.

The celebrations started late Thursday after Napoli won its first Serie A championship in 33 years with a 1-1 draw against Udinese.

A man died from gunshot wounds hours later, although the event had “nothing to do with the celebrations,” according to Naples Prefect Claudio Palomba on RAI public radio.

According to ANSA and other Italian news agencies, the victim’s friends and relatives vandalised the emergency department where he had been transported.

Palomba added that police are investigating the death and that some of the seven persons who were injured throughout the night were injured by fireworks.

Wild celebrations were widely predicted in Naples after the “Scudetto” championship triumph, and officials had taken many precautions to attempt to keep public order in check.

The city core was pedestrianised, and fireworks and firecrackers were prohibited, yet Neapolitans continued to celebrate with such objects throughout the night.
