The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has renewed its pressure on the Federal Government to dismiss the newly appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),  Professor Joash Amupitan.

The group claims he authored a legal brief sent to the United States which alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Monday, the Executive Director of the organisation, Professor Ishaq Akintola, questioned why the government had taken no action three weeks after the accusation came to light.

Akintola said the issue remained unresolved and warned that silence from authorities risked further tension.

He noted that several Islamic bodies, including the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria and the Da’wah Coordination Council of Nigeria, had already called for Amupitan’s removal. Other civic groups, among them Voice of Liberty Nigeria and the Concerned Citizens for Peace, Justice, and Democratic Integrity, joined the demand.

According to the statement, neither the professor nor the government has publicly denied his involvement in what MURIC describes as a false and divisive document.

The group asked whether the authorities intended to ignore the matter until public attention faded and questioned why the new electoral chief appeared shielded from scrutiny.
