Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos State has been named the first climate smart airport in Nigeria by Airport Carbon Accreditation.

The independent carbon management certification body on Friday said Murtala Muhammed Airport has received its level 1 ‘Mapping’ recognition.

In a tweet on its official account, Airport Carbon Accreditation said, “Today we welcome a new accredited airport in the African region! Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, operated by Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria joined the community of climate smart airports as the first ever in Nigeria.

“The airport received Airport Carbon Accreditation level 1 ‘Mapping’ recognition. Great work!”

Airport Carbon Accreditation is a voluntary, independent and institutionally-endorsed carbon management certification standard for airports. The body has so far certified 310 airports.

MMIA is the major airport in Nigeria. The airport was initially built during World War II and is named after Murtala Muhammed, the fourth military ruler of Nigeria.
