Mixed reactions have continued to trail the new pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly known as petrol.

Nigerians woke up on Tuesday to the announcement of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) announcement of an increase in the price of petrol to N617 from its previous N480 per litre.

Nigerians took to social media to express their opinion about the development.

On the microblogging site, Twitter, while most Nigerian vent their frustrations about the new price, others were optimistic with their opinion hoping that the deregulation policy of the Federal Government will drive down the price.

Popular Twitter influencer Mohammed Jammal also known as white Nigerian in his tweet said, “The truth is fuel subsidy needed to go! All candidates promised for it to go. We will have to make lifestyle changes to accommodate it. We are all in this together and together we will overcome it for the betterment of our country InshAllah”

Another Twitter user popularly known as Morris Monye expressing lamenting the situation tweets, “Naira to the dollar is high. Naira to pounds is high. The fuel price is high. Groceries are high. Minimum wage and your salaries LOW. Politicians’ salaries are very high.”

Public commentator, Shehu Gazali Sadiq decrying the impact of the new price said “Agbado people are rejoicing that fuel consumption in Nigeria has significantly dropped since the removal of the subsidy. They failed to realize that if SMEs are not quickly supported by the government many businesses will close down and unemployment will escalate. You cannot separate the impact of fuel subsidy removal from SMEs.”
