Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu of Obitoks Hospital has stated that the intestine removed from the late Adebola Akin-Bright, a 12-year-old boy, were “mistakenly discarded” rather than being sent for histology.

The late Akin-Bright underwent two initial procedures at Obitoks before being transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he died on September 19.

Dr. Baiyewu made the confession before an ad hoc committee chaired by Hon. Noheem Adams, which was looking into the missing intestines matter concerning late Akin-Bright.

A video detailing the committee’s investigations was shown yesterday at a public hearing on the matter held by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

In a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, the media assistant to Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the Assembly stated that Dr. Baiyewu admitted to removing three parts from Master Akin-Bright during surgery and agreed that the parts were mistakenly destroyed rather than being taken for histology.

The video clip and evidence also revealed that Obitoks Hospital only used auxiliary nurses throughout the surgery.

Dr. Baiyewu also stated that the video shown was an accurate representation of what occurred during the investigation.

Following the screening of the video, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, stated that the House conducted a thorough investigation and that the Ministry of Health, through the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), had temporarily suspended the operation of Obitoks Hospital’s theatre, which he claimed lacked standard medical procedures.

He stated that when Master Akin-Bright was brought to LASUTH, he was quite ill and needed to be stabilized before being operated on.

He said that at the time of the surgery at LASUTH, the doctors found something unusual about the stomach, adding that a major part of the small intestine was discovered to be missing.

He stated that during the surgery at LASUTH, doctors observed something peculiar about the stomach, adding that a significant portion of the small intestine was discovered to be missing.
